Practical Guide

Drawn vs Typed Electronic Signatures

Both methods create a visual signature, but they solve different design and usability needs. Neither method alone provides identity verification or a complete audit trail.

Updated

Choose Draw Mode When…

  • You want a mark based on your own hand movement.
  • You have a touchscreen, stylus, or comfortable trackpad.
  • You want an SVG that can scale cleanly.
  • You are willing to redraw until the result is clear.

Choose Type Mode When…

  • You need a quick and consistent result.
  • Drawing with a pointer is difficult.
  • A clean cursive name is more important than reproducing your usual mark.
  • You only need a transparent PNG.

Appearance and Accessibility

Drawing can feel more personal, but drawing with a mouse may look less controlled. Typing is accessible to more people and gives a repeatable result, although the chosen font may be used by other people too. Readability matters more than decorative complexity for small document fields.

Legal and Process Considerations

The appearance of a signature is only one part of a signing process. Intent, consent, attribution, document integrity, recordkeeping, and local rules may be more important than whether the mark was drawn or typed.
