Practical Guide

How to Add a Signature to a PDF

A transparent PNG is a widely supported way to place a visual signature into a PDF. The exact button names vary by PDF editor, but the safe workflow is consistent.

Updated

Before You Begin

  • Keep an untouched copy of the original PDF.
  • Confirm that the recipient accepts an inserted signature image.
  • Use a private device for sensitive documents.
  • Choose a transparent PNG to avoid a visible white box.

Add the Signature

  1. Create or select your signature PNG.
  2. Open a copy of the PDF in a trusted editor.
  3. Choose the editor’s image, fill, annotate, or sign feature.
  4. Select the PNG and place it on the intended signature line.
  5. Resize from a corner to preserve its proportions.
  6. Save as a new PDF and reopen it to confirm the image remains visible.

Avoid Blurry or Misplaced Signatures

Do not stretch the image wider from one side. Start with a reasonably large transparent PNG and reduce its size inside the document. Zoom in after placement to check edges and alignment.

Understand the Limitation

Placing an image into a PDF does not by itself prove identity or prevent later edits. If the transaction requires an audit trail, certificate, identity check, or tamper evidence, use a service designed for that process.
